Mumbai: A BMW went up in flames recently on Western Express Highway at Vakola, throwing traffic out of gear for two hours. After a massive fire in a car on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road at another time, the long cooling process forced other vehicles to be held back at a distance owing to safety concerns. Data from Jan-Nov this year shows 839 vehicle breakdowns on the city's streets, which, along with fires in vehicles, become a significant cause of peak-hour congestion, as per traffic police. Cars led the chart with 240 breakdowns, followed by tempos (142) and BEST buses (131). Other buses, including electric ones, trucks, dumpers, cement mixers and tankers, too, were on the list. Electric buses and luxury vehicles that break down pose particular challenges as they require specialised technical teams for removal, causing extensive delays and backlogs. Electric buses typically require two to three hours to be cleared. "In luxury vehicles, even a minor crash or an airbag getting deployed results in the wheels getting locked, requiring manufacturer intervention for removal from the site as standard towing equipment proves ineffective," said a police officer. Nitin Dossa from Western India Automobile Association, India's oldest motoring organisation, criticised dealers and manufacturers for inadequate customer guidance during vehicle sales. "Every vehicle is different and it is essential for drivers to be fully trained in using it. They must know what to do in emergencies. Maintenance of high-end vehicles should always be done at authorised dealers only. Our biggest concern is the safety of children travelling in such vehicles," he said. Commuter advocate Rupesh Shelatkar from Aapli BEST Aaplyachsathi said roughly 10% of BEST buses, particularly wet lease ones, break down during operation. "The primary cause is inadequate bus maintenance. Despite complaints through email and social media, BEST hadn't addressed these issues effectively," he alleged. Shelatkar said while penalties were imposed on contractors for breakdowns, this wasn't an effective resolution. "At least six buses caught fire in the recent past and they had deteriorated seating conditions. Such vehicles will inevitably break down due to insufficient maintenance," he said, while demanding a comprehensive fleet audit. A high-ranking BEST official said breakdowns cannot be prevented given the fleet of under-3,000 buses operating in challenging street conditions. The official said a dedicated quick response team handles such situations. "We operate a control room with wireless communication. Upon receiving a breakdown notification, it immediately alerts all support personnel. A breakdown van is dispatched from the nearest bus depot. A technical team is mobilised. A recovery vehicle is sent if on-site repairs are unfeasible or the bus cannot be restarted." For wet lease vehicles, the contracted private operators maintain their own specialised response teams to address breakdowns. JCP (traffic) Anil Kumbhare said resources were being positioned along major roads to swiftly respond to vehicle breakdowns. Traffic policemen on duty have been equipped with pooling cables to assist in towing stranded vehicles. "I would appeal to commuters to get their vehicles serviced and maintained regularly," said Kumbhare. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . My collection currently consists of a DSLR, the , a vintage point-and-shoot, a film camera, and oh, probably 20 disposables I've gone through in my life. But a few months ago, I took two disposables to the photo store to get developed and all 50 photos somehow came back blank, and that was the last straw—there had to be a better solution. Enter: . Considering the fact that each dispo costs me, like, $40 to buy and develop, when I saw that Camp Snap makes a that gives you infinite amounts of the exact same type of photos, I RANNNN to snag one. Camp Snap's camera seemed to be the best of both worlds—the screen-free delayed gratification *and* the fact that you can transfer the pics off your camera at the end of the night. It also seemed like a great, dare I even say the for anyone under the age of 30—so obviously as your resident , I had to test one out to see if it actually lives up to the hype. Setting it up Okay, right out of the bow, the camera is so cute. I opted for the shade Arctic White, but it also comes in a range of other earthy colors as well as limited-edition prints like , and , and (!!) that I fear I may need. There isn't much to set up—I simply charged it with my Macbook charger (USB-C, if you're fancy like that) right out of the box and then I was ready to start using it. How it works The Camp Snap camera is so simple that a literal child could use it (no, really, apparently people have been giving these to their kids to take pics with, lol). There are : the flash button and the shutter. Just hold down the shutter button to turn it on and snap away! The camera can take —there's a tiny counter on the back of the camera—stored on an internal SD card that you never need to take out. I just using that same USB-C cord and . Don't expect crystal-clear, high-definition, 4K images—the photos that this baby takes (beautifully, may I add) have that . I used mine at a Halloween party and everyone was like, "I love your film camera!". I passed it around for party pics and everyone was also like, "Wait, don't use up all of her film!" which was very nice but not something they needed to worry about. It was seriously so fun seeing how the photos turned out once the party was over. Also, I've been on such an anti-screen kick (she says, while typing this on her laptop, lol) that I love having a camera that's purely for capturing memories—no notifications or instant gratification. It's totally distraction-free (aka I don't end up scrolling on IG after taking a photo) and I loved being surprised by pics that I forgot that I took. One thing about my friends—they love their film cameras and their point-and-shoots, so I'm definitely going to be gifting the Camp Snap camera to a few of them this year. This bad boy would also make a great for a younger sibling/cousin (see: our gift guides for and ). My only thing is that sometimes two photos taken in the exact same lighting would turn out different—whether a photo would turn out super green, super yellow, or totally sick seemed random. I haven't quite gotten it down to a science yet so my current strategy is taking a bunch of pics in the hopes that one sticks, but hopefully there will be more filter options in the future! Pros: Cons: Ok, I'm buying one for myself and gifting one to everyone I know. Where can I snag the Camp Snap camera?! Yay, join the club! You can buy a Camp Snap camera directly on their website (some styles are out of stock due to high demand, but plenty are still available) or through Urban Outfitters—they carry the camera in two two exclusive prints, btw! The cameras cost the same on both sites—$65 for the regular camera and $75 for the printed version. There are more color options on the Camp Snap website, but you can score free shipping on the Urban Outfitters site with any $50 purchase! OTTAWA — The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says it's sent another round of counter-proposals to the federal mediator appointed to help it reach a deal with Canada Post as a countrywide strike nears the three-week mark. The union says it's ready to get back to federal mediation, which was put on pause last week as the two sides appeared too far apart to reach an agreement. As the strike by more than 55,000 workers drags on, the business community has been ramping up pressure on the federal government to intervene. The federal government has so far resisted calls to step in, even though it intervened in other labour disputes earlier this year. Canada Post said it presented a new framework for reaching agreements over the weekend to the union, which said it needs to see key issues like wages and the expansion of postal services addressed before it can make a deal. One of the key issues in bargaining has been the push to expand Canada Post delivery to the weekend, as the two sides disagree over how best to make it happen. But they are advised to take extra precaution once in South Korea amid the political tensions in their host country. “We wouldn’t advise them to cancel their trips, but we will tell them to be very circumspect and careful and take precautions, especially when they are abroad,” said Foreign Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega in a dzBB interview on Wednesday. READ: South Korea lifts martial law decree after lawmakers vote against it “There’s no war, that’s what’s important so we will just advise those traveling to take precaution if they want to push through with their trips,” De Vega added. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared “emergency martial law” on Tuesday, accusing the opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea, and paralyzing the government with antistate activities. The martial law order was lifted hours after it was imposed after drawing strong opposition from parliament. The estimated 68,000 Filipinos currently in South Korea were advised by the Philippine Embassy in Seoul to remain calm and “remember to follow the instructions that local authorities will issue.” The Philippine Ambassador to Seoul, Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega, described the overall situation as normal. “(It’s) business as usual, schools are open, all forms of public transport are also open and airports operating. Embassies are open,” she said in a text message reported by the Philippine News Agency (PNA). Other foreign missions in South Korea had advised their citizens to remain cautious and avoid participating in political rallies. The US Embassy issued an alert on Wednesday, saying the “situation remains fluid” despite Yoon’s withdrawal of his martial law order. It also announced the cancellation of routine consular appointments for US citizens and visa applicants. “US citizens should anticipate potential disruptions. When in public, you should pay attention to your surroundings and exercise routine safety precautions,” the US Embassy said. “You should avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large crowds, gatherings, protests, or rallies. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.” British nationals in South Korea were advised to follow Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice and remain alert. The Japanese Embassy in Seoul sent out multiple emails to its citizens urging them to “continue to monitor the news and ensure their safety.” Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Wednesday said Tokyo was monitoring the situation with “exceptional and serious concerns,” while pledging to “take all possible measures” to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals. The Australian Embassy described the situation in South Korea as “evolving due to developments in domestic politics” and urged its citizens to avoid protests and demonstrations. “Transport and other essential services may be disrupted. Monitor the media for updates and follow the advice of local authorities,” it added. The Russian Embassy told its citizens to “remain calm, follow the authorities’ recommendations, and refrain from participating in mass events, especially those of a political nature.” Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy assessed that “at present, social order in South Korea is normal.” Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address.
