'Wicked' Face Paint Not Flying at AMC With Fans Asked to Wash Green OffNebraska football signing day preview: Potential flips and a 5-star up for grabsThe rain that had been falling over Kelowna stopped for a few hours on the evening of Nov. 20, while a group of people gathered in Stuart Park to remember those who have been killed in acts of anti-trans violence over the last year. Over the last year, there have been 350 reported deaths of transgender, gender non-binary, and gender non-conforming folks worldwide. , to remember a woman who was killed in an anti-trans attack. The annual vigil was held by the vice president of the 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy and inclusion-based organization. a resource for transgender, non binary and gender non-conforming people said in a statement that as visibility queer communities increase, so too has there been an "observable rise in misinformation about trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary (TTNB) people and gender-affirming care." The prevalence of misinformation has impacted the degree to which anti-trans backlash is experienced, particularly for trans-feminine and racialized TTNB folks, said Trans Care BC in an article on the Day of Remembrance. At the vigil, McWatters made a point of noting that the hundreds of names that were read to the group gathered in Stuart Park is likely not complete, and does not include the names of those who died by suicide due to a lack of social acceptance. "This is an opportunity to have a solemn event to acknowledge that the world is not always that kind, and that transphobia and violence against transgender people exists. It is to remember those that we lost and to move forward and to make the world a better place," said McWatters. At the vigil, several people shared stories of times they have been berated and feared for their lives in public because they were not conforming with social gender norms. One person shared that last week a vehicle yelled derogatory comments and swerved towards them while they were walking because they were wearing lipstick. Multiple people, ranging from teenagers to people in their 60s, shared stories about how they have considered self-harm after being shamed for expressing their gender identity. McWatters encourages people to reach out to Advocacy Canada, herself or support groups if they want to speak with someone. She also encourages allies to check-in and stand up for their friends. An easy way for allies to demonstrate support is to use inclusive language and respect people’s pronouns and chosen names. Cencora Inc. stock underperforms Tuesday when compared to competitors despite daily gainsTired of thinking about what gifts to get everyone this year? Artificial intelligence chatbots might help, but don’t expect them to do all the work or always give you the right answers. Anyone scouring the internet for deals is likely going to encounter more conversational iterations of the chatbots that some retailers and e-commerce sites have built to provide shoppers with enhanced customer service. Some companies have integrated models infused with newer generative AI technologies, allowing shoppers to seek advice by asking naturally phrased questions like “What’s the best wireless speaker?” Retailers hope consumers use these chatbots, which are typically called shopping assistants, as virtual companions that help them discover or compare products. Prior chatbots were mostly used for task-oriented functions such as helping customers track online orders or return ones that didn’t meet expectations. Amazon, the king of online retail, has said its customers have been questioning Rufus, the generative AI-powered shopping assistant it launched this year, for information such as whether a specific coffee maker is easy to clean, or what recommendations it has for a lawn game for a child’s birthday party. And Rufus, which is available for holiday shoppers in the U.S. and some other countries, is not the only shopping assistant out there. A select number of Walmart shoppers will have access this year to a similar chatbot the nation’s largest retailer is testing in a few product categories, including toys and electronics. Perplexity AI added something new to the AI chat-shopping world last month by rolling out a feature on its AI-powered search engine that enables users to ask a question like “What’s the best women’s leather boots?” and then receive specific product results that the San Francisco-based company says are not sponsored. “It has been adopted at pretty incredible scale,” Mike Mallazzo, an analyst and writer at retail research media company Future Commerce, said. Retailers with websites and e-commerce companies started paying more attention to chatbots when use of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence text chatbot made by the company OpenAI, went mainstream in late 2022, sparking public and business interest in the generative AI technology that powers the tool. Victoria’s Secret, IKEA, Instacart and the Canadian retailer Ssense are among other companies experimenting with chatbots, some of which use technology from OpenAI. Even before the improved chatbots, online retailers were creating product recommendations based on a customer’s prior purchases or search history. Amazon was at the forefront of having recommendations on its platform, so Rufus’ ability to provide some is not particularly groundbreaking. But Rajiv Mehta, the vice president of search and conversational shopping at Amazon, said the company is able to offer more helpful recommendations now by programming Rufus to ask clarifying or follow-up questions. Customers are also using Rufus to look for deals, some of which are personalized, Mehta said. To be sure, chatbots are prone to hallucinations, so Rufus and most of the tools like it can get things wrong. Juozas Kaziukenas, founder of e-commerce intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse, wrote in a November blog post that his firm tested Rufus by requesting gaming TV recommendations. The chatbot’s response included products that were not TVs. When asked for the least expensive options, Rufus came back with suggestions that weren’t the cheapest, Kaziukenas said. An Associated Press reporter recently asked Rufus to give some gift recommendations for a brother. The chatbot quickly spit out a few ideas for “thoughtful gifts,” ranging from a T-shirt and a keychain with charms to a bolder suggestion: a multifunctional knife engraved with the phrase “BEST BROTHER EVER.” After a 5-minute written conversation, Rufus offered more tailored suggestions: a few Barcelona soccer jerseys sold by third-party sellers. But it wasn’t able to say which seller offered the lowest price. When asked during another search for a price comparison on a popular skin serum, Rufus showed the product’s pre-discounted price instead of its present one. “Rufus is constantly learning,” Amazon’s Mehta said during an interview. Shop AI, a chatbot that Canadian e-commerce company Shopify launched last year, can also help shoppers discover new products by asking its own questions, such as soliciting details about an intended gift recipient or features the buyer wants to avoid. Shop AI has trouble, however, recommending specific products or identifying the lowest-priced item in a product category. The limitations show the technology is still in its infancy and has a long way to go before it becomes as useful as the retail industry and many shoppers wish it could be. To truly transform the shopping experience, shopping assistants will “need to be deeply personalized” and be able, on their own, to remember a customer’s order history, product preferences and purchasing habits, consulting giant McKinsey & Company said in an August report. Amazon has noted that Rufus’ answers are based on information contained in product listings, community Q&As and customer reviews, which would include the fake reviews that are used to boost or diminish sales for products on its marketplace. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks tiptoed to more records amid a mixed Tuesday of trading, tacking a touch more onto what’s already been a stellar year so far. The S&P 500 edged up by 2 points, or less than 0.1%, to set an all-time high for the 55th time this year. It’s climbed in 10 of the last 11 days and is on track for one of its best years since the turn of the millennium. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 76 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.4% to its own record set a day earlier. AT&T rose 4.6% after it boosted its profit forecast for the year. It also announced a $10 billion plan to send cash to its investors by buying back its own stock, while saying it expects to authorize another $10 billion of repurchases in 2027. On the losing end of Wall Street was U.S. Steel, which fell 8%. President-elect Donald Trump reiterated on social media that he would not let Japan’s Nippon Steel take over the iconic Pennsylvania steelmaker. Nippon Steel announced plans last December to buy the Pittsburgh-based steel producer for $14.1 billion in cash, raising concerns about what the transaction could mean for unionized workers, supply chains and U.S. national security. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden also came out against the acquisition. Tesla sank 1.6% after a judge in Delaware reaffirmed a previous ruling that the electric car maker must revoke Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar pay package. The judge denied a request by attorneys for Musk and Tesla’s corporate directors to vacate her ruling earlier this year requiring the company to rescind the unprecedented pay package. All told, the S&P 500 rose 2.73 points to 6,049.88. The Dow fell 76.47 to 44,705.53, and the Nasdaq composite gained 76.96 to 19,480.91. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady after a report showed U.S. employers were advertising slightly more job openings at the end of October than a month earlier. Continued strength there would raise optimism that the economy could remain out of a recession that many investors had earlier worried was inevitable. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.23% from 4.20% from late Monday. Yields have seesawed since Election Day amid worries that Trump’s preferences for lower tax rates and bigger tariffs could spur higher inflation along with economic growth. But traders are still confident the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again at its next meeting in two weeks. They’re betting on a nearly three-in-four chance of that, according to data from CME Group. Lower rates can give the economy more juice, but they can also give inflation more fuel. The key report this week that could guide the Fed’s next move will arrive on Friday. It’s the monthly jobs report , which will show how many workers U.S. employers hired and fired during November. It could be difficult to parse given how much storms and strikes distorted figures in October. Based on trading in the options market, Friday’s jobs report appears to be the biggest potential market mover until the Fed announces its next decision on interest rates Dec. 18, according to strategists at Barclays Capital. In financial markets abroad, the value of South Korea’s currency fell 1.1% against the U.S. dollar following a frenetic night where President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law and then later said he’d lift it after lawmakers voted to reject military rule. Stocks of Korean companies that trade in the United States also fell, including a 1.6% drop for SK Telecom. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.9% to help lead global markets. Some analysts think Japanese stocks could end up benefiting from Trump’s threats to raise tariffs , including for goods coming from China . Trade relations between the U.S. and China took another step backward after China said it is banning exports to the U.S. of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications. The counterpunch came swiftly after the U.S. Commerce Department expanded the list of Chinese technology companies subject to export controls to include many that make equipment used to make computer chips, chipmaking tools and software. The 140 companies newly included in the so-called “entity list” are nearly all based in China. In China, stock indexes rose 1% in Hong Kong and 0.4% in Shanghai amid unconfirmed reports that Chinese leaders would meet next week to discuss planning for the coming year. Investors are hoping it may bring fresh stimulus to help spur growth in the world’s second-largest economy. In France, the CAC 40 rose 0.3% amid continued worries about politics in Paris , where the government is battling over the budget. AP Business Writers Yuri Kageyama and Matt Ott contributed.
Georgia's rights ombudsman on Tuesday accused police of torturing pro-European Union protesters rallying for six consecutive days against the government's decision to shelve EU accession talks amid a post-election crisis. The country of some 3.7 million has been rocked by demonstrations since the ruling Georgian Dream party announced last week it would halt EU accession talks. Police on Tuesday evening used water cannon and tear gas on the sixth night of pro-EU protests in Tbilisi after the prime minister threatened demonstrators with reprisals amid a deepening crisis in the Black Sea nation. Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has refused to back down and threatened Tuesday to punish political opponents, accusing them of being behind violence at mass protests. Protesters gathered outside parliament for a sixth straight night but the crowd appeared slightly smaller than on recent nights, an AFP journalist saw. Draped in EU and Georgian flags, protesters booed riot police officers and threw fireworks. Police responded by directing hoses at the protesters, with some dancing in the jets and others sheltering under umbrellas. The police ordered demonstrators to leave through loud hailers and used water cannon to push the crowd away from the parliament. Then they deployed tear gas against the crowd in a nearby street, causing protesters to cough, with some using saline solution to wash out their eyes. Police roughly detained some demonstrators, Georgian independent television showed. Ombudsman Levan Ioseliani said in a statement that most injuries sustained by detained protesters "are concentrated on the face, eyes, and head", adding that "the location, nature, and severity of these injuries strongly suggest that police are using violence against citizens as a punitive measure", which "constitutes an act of torture." Tensions were already high after October parliamentary elections that saw Georgian Dream return to power amid accusations that it rigged the vote. But Kobakhidze's decision that Georgia would not hold EU membership talks until 2028 triggered uproar, although he insisted the country is still heading towards membership. The mostly young protesters accuse Georgian Dream of acting on Russian orders and fear the ex-Soviet country will end up back under Russian influence. Demonstrators projected a message Tuesday that read "thank you for not being tired" onto the parliament building, an AFP reporter saw. During the latest wave of protests, 293 people have been detained, the interior ministry said Tuesday evening, while 143 police have been injured. The health ministry said that on Monday evening 23 protesters were injured. "We want freedom and we do not want to find ourselves in Russia," 21-year-old protester Nika Maghradze told AFP. Demonstrators accuse the government of betraying Georgia's bid for EU membership, which is enshrined in its constitution and supported by around 80 percent of the population. Nugo Chigvinadze, 41, who works in logistics, told AFP at Tuesday's protest that he did not believe the prime minister's claim that the country is still aiming for EU membership. Sign up to get our free daily email of the biggest stories! "Whatever our government is saying is a lie. No one believed it. No one," he said. "They are not intending to enter the European Union." Pro-EU President Salome Zurabishvili -- at loggerheads with the government -- has backed the protest and demanded a re-run of the disputed parliamentary vote. But Tbilisi's top court on Tuesday rejected a lawsuit filed by Zurabishvili and opposition parties to overturn the election result. That announcement came shortly after Kobakhidze -- who has ruled out talks with the opposition -- vowed to punish his opponents. "Opposition politicians who have orchestrated the violence in recent days while hiding in their offices will not escape responsibility," he told a press conference. International criticism of Georgia's handling of the protests has grown, with several Western countries saying Tbilisi had used excessive force. Kobakhidze threatened to punish civil servants who join the protests, after several ambassadors and a deputy foreign minister resigned. "We are closely monitoring everyone's actions, and they will not go without a response," he said. Using Kremlin-style language, Kobakhidze alleged the protest movement was "funded from abroad". He also accused non-government groups -- attacked in a repressive pre-election campaign by authorities -- of being behind the protests. At Tuesday's demonstration, Tsotne, 28, who works in IT, defied the threats of reprisals, saying: "It's a peaceful protest, of course but I guess as an individual, I'm ready to defend my country here." Georgia this year adopted Russian-style legislation designed to restrict the activity of NGOs as well measures that the EU says curb LGBTQ rights. The laws prompted the United States to slap sanctions on Georgian officials. But Kobakhidze said his government hoped that the "US attitudes towards us will change after January 20" -- when Donald Trump takes office. Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte on Tuesday slammed the situation as "deeply concerning", condemning "unequivocally" the reports of violence. led-jc-am-im/giv
Louisiana lawmakers pass income and corporate tax cuts, raising statewide sales tax to pay for itThe S&P 500 and Nasdaq surged to record highs on Tuesday, bolstered by gains in tech stocks as investors prepared for upcoming jobs data releases. Meanwhile, the Dow slightly dipped amid cautious optimism in the market. Investors have been closely monitoring comments from Federal Reserve policymakers who have expressed confidence in a solid job market, though they refrained from indicating support for future interest rate cuts. A key focus for market watchers this week is Friday's U.S. employment report, which could influence future economic strategies. Notably, Amazon stocks rose following the introduction of new artificial intelligence platforms at its annual AWS conference, while U.S.-listed shares of South Korean companies and Tesla experienced declines. As investors await significant economic data, including ISM services report, the general sentiment is to wait for catalysts that can propel the market further. Morrisons customers have blasted the shop chain after facing delays with their Christmas orders and deliveries. The company acknowledged "systems issues" that disrupted deliveries, with reports of ongoing problems today. In efforts to make amends, Morrisons offered a 10 percent discount to all More Card holders, yet numerous shoppers reported not receiving this at checkout. Several unhappy customers reached out to the group on X, stating the discount was missing and they were still having issues buying what they needed for the big day. One customer recounted their experience at the Liverpool Belle Vale store, where they couldn't get the 10 percent discount and were "told by staff that there was nothing they could do". Another shopper did receive the 10 percent off but found they had earned no points, despite doing a large shop with a bill of over £220. In response to the angry patrons on X, Morrisons has been encouraging people to get in touch via direct message with their email and More Card details for further assistance. Other shared their experience of how incomplete orders have left them scrambling for their essential Christmas dinner items. One customer shared their disappointment: "You let me down massively yesterday [December 23] by telling me five mins before my collection time that my preordered food order wouldn’t have a turkey, potatoes and few other things. Had to run around seeing what I could get from other shops." Another frustrated shopper expressed their frustration at the inadequate substitution that was offered for a crucial Christmas dinner item. They stated: "We just went to collect (click and collect) our turkey - ordered weeks ago and it’s not available got substituted with a chicken. "Absolutely rubbish - did our big shop yesterday wanted to use all the vouchers we’d saved and couldn’t - not shopping with you again." Another customer recounted their stressful experience trying to hastily arrange their festive meal at the eleventh hour: "Dreadful service for Christmas order today. "Had to buy a free range replacement turkey, parsnips, mozzarella sticks and prawns as you did not have my order available. Have used this service for many years but won’t be using Morrisons again." Another person said they had been forced to cancel their online order given they "couldn't add anything to my basket, it was all saying out of stock and no alternatives". They braved the Christmas rush and did their shop in store but were unable to get the 10 percent discount. One individual who did their shopping yesterday morning (December 23) claimed they were left "seriously out of pocket" as they could not use their More Card. They didn't think much of the 10 percent discount either, saying: "This whole 10 percent off thing seems to seriously miss the mark to be honest, for folk like me who can't / won't be able to return to redo the whole shop today." In a statement on December 24, Morrisons said: "Today the Morrisons store experience is back to normal, but all More Card customers will still get 10 percent off their whole shop instore throughout the day. Click and Collect and Home Deliveries are working as normal. We are determined not to let a single customer down this Christmas." The supermarket has also advised that any customer who missed out on their 10 percent discount can return to the store with their receipt to have the discount applied.PHOENIX — One Arizona lawmaker isn't waiting for Robert Kennedy Jr. to pursue his promise of removing artificial ingredients from school lunch programs. State Rep. Leo Biasiucci is writing legislation that would bar public schools from serving what he calls "ultra-processed foods'' to students during the day, in the cafeteria but also through snack bars and school vending machines. The Lake Havasu City Republican has a very specific idea of what fits that definition. His proposal includes everything from potassium bromate, which is used in making bread, to a host of food colorings including Blue #2, which is a synthetic version of indigo used on baked goods, cereals and candies, and Yellow #6, the dye that gives Cheetos their distinctive color. Parents could still send lunches with their children that contain the targeted chemicals. And Biasiucci's legislation apparently would allow such items to be sold at the snack bar at football games, under an exception for "events held on the school grounds after the school day.'' Rep. Leo Biasiucci This comes amid heightened concern about food additives raised by Kennedy, who will have an outsized role in the issue as President-elect Donald Trump's pick to head the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. That is the parent agency of the Food and Drug Administration, which decides which additives are "generally recognized as safe.'' There is precedent for at least some of the proposal. One of the items on Biasiucci's list, for example, is titanium dioxide, a food color additive found in baked goods, puddings, frostings and coffee creamers. The European Food Safety Authority has concluded the chemical isn't safe in food. Many of the companies that manufacture items with these chemicals make a separate version designed to pass European standards. So while Fruit Loops sold here have Red 40, Blue 1, and Yellow 5 and 6, what's available in Germany relies on fruit and vegetable concentrates, with the only listed coloring coming from carotene. Also, a California law that takes effect in 2028 will ban six specific artificial dyes from meals served at schools. Biasiucci told Capitol Media Services on Monday he has been thinking about the issue for some time. During a trip to Italy, he began looking at the ingredients in prepared foods and how they differ from similar products in the United States. "I think now, with RFK Jr. kind of getting in the spotlight and being in the position he is, I think this conversation has finally come to the forefront,'' Biasiucci said. "The timing is perfect. This is now becoming something that people actually are paying attention to.'' But Biasiucci said that, even with the incoming federal administration, he doesn't want Arizona to have to wait for the FDA to get around to reviewing and deciding whether to ban these chemicals. "I just never depend on the federal government,'' he said. "I just don't want to wait that long.'' A Tucson Unified School District cafeteria worker sorts chicken nuggets into bags for grab-and-go meals. He also pointed out that his proposal is far narrower than anything that would have to go through the federal bureaucracy, as it deal only with school lunches. "If we're providing this food for free to our children, which are the most vulnerable ... I want to make sure that that food we are providing them on the government dime is actually safe and it is not something that's toxic,'' he said. "They're the ones that are growing and need to make sure they're getting the most nutrients.'' Heidi Vega, spokeswoman for the Arizona School Boards Association, called what Biasiucci is trying to do "certainly a step in the right direction.'' But she added a caveat. "It's essential to ensure there's sufficient funding and transitional support available to local education agencies,'' Vega said. That funding is "crucial to prevent potential negative impacts on meal accessibility for Arizona's most vulnerable students," she said. Biasiucci acknowledged the financial issue. But he said there appear to be some options. During COVID, the U.S. Agriculture Department set up a program to help states deal with the challenges of supply chain disruptions. The department now is using those funds for "Try It Local,'' in which schools operating under the National School Lunch Program can be reimbursed for purchasing "unprocessed or minimally processed" locally or regionally produced food for their lunch programs. Arizona got nearly $4.4 million for the program. Strictly speaking, the program does not mention artificial dyes or other additives. But the list of items eligible would seem to preclude or minimize their use. They range from fruits and vegetables to meats, beans and dairy foods such as cheese or yogurt. Conversely, the program does not provide money for items such as breaded meats, muffins, cookies, frozen bread and ready-to-heat items like pre-made sandwiches and pizza. Biasiucci said even if that program and its funding are shut down, he believes the feeding of proper meals to students is a higher priority than some other things now funded by the federal government. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne would like to do some research into the effects of these dyes and chemicals before taking a position, said an aide, Doug Nick. But he said Horne has a history of trying to limit what can be available to kids on campuses, noting he was behind rules adopted a decade ago to ban sugared sodas at schools.
