Oldacre, a 6-foot-6 backup center, converted all six of her field goal attempts and 9 of 10 free throws. She also had seven rebounds and three of the Longhorns' 21 steals. Madison Booker had 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals for Texas (13-1). Starting center Taylor Jones had 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Texas Rio Grande Valley: The Vaqueros average 16 turnovers a game but matched that by midway through the second quarter. They committed 13 while falling behind 24-5 after the first quarter. Texas: Aaliyah Moore's physical health is something to watch. Moore, a starting power forward, missed her first game this season on Sunday while resting because of tendinitis in her right knee. Moore played with that condition last season but it has been a struggle for her. Texas has only two centers and two power forwards on its roster. After Texas Rio Grande Valley sliced a 19-point deficit to 10 with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter, Texas finished the half with a 13-1 push, eight from Oldacre, during the final 2:36. The Longhorns outscored the Vaqueros 54-12 in the paint and it could have been worse. The Longhorns missed 12 layups. Texas Rio Grande Valley is at Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, and Texas is at No. 9 Oklahoma on Thursday. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . From sex drive woes to cheating and porn addiction, Dear Deidre reveals readers’ most common problems of 2024For former President Jimmy Carter who died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100, there will be two public observances—one in Atlanta and another in Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment, The Carter Center said in a statement. Why It Matters Carter was the longest living president in U.S. history. What to Know President Joe Biden said in a Sunday statement that he "will be ordering an official state funeral to be held in Washington D.C." Details of the state funeral, which is a formal ceremony with traditions of lying in state, processions, religious services, military honors, and national mourning, will be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region. State funerals are typically a week to 10 days of events, with three stages, as outlined by the task force: "Stage I includes ceremonies within the state in which the president, former president, or president-elect was in residence. Stage II includes ceremonies within Washington, DC, and Stage III includes ceremonies in the state in which the authorized individual has chosen to be interred." Last year, Biden said at a fundraiser that Carter "asked me to do his eulogy" when the time came. Newsweek has reached out to the White House for comment via email on Sunday. The last presidential state funeral was held in 2018 for former President George H.W. Bush , who died from a form of Parkinson's disease at age 94. His funeral took place at the Washington National Cathedral, which has hosted four state funerals. The 39th president is survived by his children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, 11 grandchildren , and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, passed away last November. She was buried in Plains, Georgia, and Carter will rest in peace next to her. The couple was married for 77 years, the longest marriage in presidential history. In lieu of flowers, the Carter family requests contributions to The Carter Center, which can be completed online . Tributes will be collected in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Enduring Hope Fund, according to the website. What People Are Saying Biden and first lady Jill Biden said in a statement on Sunday: "Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what's extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well...We will miss them both [Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter] dearly, but take solace knowing they are reunited once again and remain forever in our hearts." Chip Carter, the former president's son, said in a statement released by The Carter Center on Sunday: "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs." President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday : "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers." Former President Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a joint statement on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday: "Hillary and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others—until the very end...I will always be proud to have presented the Medal of Freedom to him and Rosalynn in 1999, and to have worked with him in the years after he left the White House." What Happens Next Details of the public observances will be released in the coming days. "The final arrangements for President Carter's state funeral, including all public events and motorcade routes, are still pending," The Carter Center said in its statement. Updated 12/29/24, 6:06 p.m. ET: This article has been updated to include Biden's statement.

Josh Norris scores late power-play goal in the Senators' 3-1 victory over the Wild

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump launched a blitz of picks for his Cabinet , but he took his time before settling on billionaire investor Scott Bessent as his treasury secretary nominee. The Republican not only wanted someone who jibes with him, but an official who can execute his economic vision and look straight out of central casting while doing so. With his Yale University education and pedigree trading for Soros Fund Management before establishing his own funds, Bessent will be tasked with a delicate balancing act. Trump expects him to help reset the global trade order, enable trillions of dollars in tax cuts, ensure inflation stays in check , manage a ballooning national debt and still keep the financial markets confident. “Scott will support my Policies that will drive U.S. Competitiveness, and stop unfair Trade imbalances, work to create an Economy that places Growth at the forefront, especially through our coming World Energy Dominance,” Trump said in a statement. But for all the confidence, Trump was cautious in picking the 62-year-old, a sign that he understood the stakes after winning a presidential election largely shaped by inflation hitting a four-decade peak in 2022. He felt comfortable making faster decisions on Fox News host Pete Hegseth for defense secretary, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for secretary of state and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for health and human services secretary. His choice of Bessent went against the opinion of billionaire Elon Musk, who is co-leading Trump’s advisory panel known as the “Department of Government Efficiency” initiative. The head of Tesla and SpaceX posted on his social media site X before Trump’s selection that Bessent would be “a business-as-usual choice.” The pick also showed the internal tensions of a candidate who won by appealing to blue-collar voters but who depends on an administration staffed by those, who like Trump, enjoy a life of extreme wealth. Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., was unimpressed by Bessent. “ Donald Trump pretends to be an economic populist, but it wouldn’t be a Trump Treasury Department without a rich political donor running the show,” Wyden said in a statement rushed out immediately after the announcement Friday evening. “When it comes to the economy, the government under Trump is of, by, and for the ultra-wealthy.” Bessent caught Trump’s attention during the campaign with his ideas for 3% growth, a reduced budget deficit equal to 3% of gross domestic product and 3 million additional barrels a day of oil production. Larry Kudlow , the TV host and a director of the White House National Economic Council during Trump’s initial term, supported him. But critics in Trump’s orbit said Bessent was weak on tariffs. Another onetime contender, Howard Lutnick , the billionaire CEO of the investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald, was more pro-tariffs but less reassuring to some business leaders. Trump picked him to head the Commerce Department and take the lead on trade issues. Trump also looked at other candidates, including former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh, Marc Rowan, the chief executive of Apollo Global Management, and Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn. Trump’s decision on his treasury chief is tied in part to most Republican voters’ biggest motivation for returning him to the White House: the state of the U.S. economy and the pressure from high prices. According to AP VoteCast , an early November survey of about 120,000 voters nationwide, about 3 in 10 voters said they wanted total upheaval in how the country is run. Bessent has been deeply critical of President Joe Biden ’s economic policies, saying in remarks at the conservative Manhattan Institute that he was “alarmed” by the size of government spending and deficits and that Biden had embraced a “central planning” mindset that he thought belonged on “the scrap heap of history.” Biden, for his part, chose Janet Yellen, the former Federal Reserve chair, to be his treasury secretary, relying on her credibility as an economist as his administration successfully pushed for $1.9 trillion in pandemic aid in 2021. But inflation jumped as the United States recovered from pandemic shutdowns, driven by supply chain challenges, global conflict and — according to Biden administration critics — an excessive amount of pandemic aid. Government officials and economists are uncertain about what Trump would prioritize. The Republican campaigned on jacking up tariffs against China and other trade partners. But people in his economic orbit privately insist that what he cares about are fair terms in which other countries such as China don’t disadvantage the United States by subsidizing industries, manipulating currencies and suppressing their own workers’ wages. The president-elect wants to extend and expand his 2017 tax cuts, many of which are set to expire after 2025. He’s also proposed an array of tax cuts, such as no taxes on tips or overtime pay or Social Security benefits, that would create possible deficit increases. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, an independent fiscal watchdog, estimated that Trump could possibly add between $1.7 trillion to $15.6 trillion to projected deficits over 10 years, a sign of the uncertainty regarding his economic plans. The economist Olivier Blanchard, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, this week laid out the contradictions of “Trumponomics.” Deficit-funded tax cuts and tariff hikes could be inflationary, yet Trump won November’s election in large part because of voter frustration with inflation. There’s also his promise of deportations of unauthorized immigrants that could lower employment, though it’s not clear what Trump will do once in office. “The U.S. should be thinking about reducing the deficit, quite apart from Trump,” Blanchard said in a webcast. “Trump is probably going to make it worse.” Trump’s treasury secretary might ultimately face the additional responsibility of trying to pressure Fed Chair Jerome Powell to do as Trump wants, since the inflationary pressures outlined by Blanchard likely mean the Fed would try to slow growth to keep inflation from overheating, likely upsetting Trump. “The risk of a conflict between the Trump administration and the Fed is very high,” Blanchard said in a webcast. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is set to celebrate his 40th birthday on Dec. 30. However, he has not shown signs of slowing down despite being on the older side of the NBA. The fact that James has remained a top basketball player has left his current head coach, JJ Redick, in awe. James has tied basketball legend Vince Carter for playing 22 seasons in the league. However, unlike Carter, the 6-foot-9 forward is still putting up All-Star numbers, setting him apart from other aging stars in the league. One person who has witnessed James’ longevity from the start is Redick. When the former Duke star entered the league, the Lakers star was already an established star, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers . The head coach still can’t believe how the four-time champion has continued to dominate and stay at an elite level. “I played against LeBron in high school so I knew that he was gonna be great in the NBA,” Redick said. “I don’t think you could ever predict, no matter how much the prognosticators label people that 16, 17, 18 years old whether or not they’re gonna be all-time greats, which he turned out to be. And to be clear, it hasn’t gone quickly for me the last 21 years.” “It’s kind of mind-boggling just to be in this position coaching him, playing against him for 15 years, taking three years of calling his games and then he’s still playing at this level. Feels like he’s just been doing this forever and not a small stretch in human history, but forever. And that just speaks to his competitive stamina and love for the game.” JJ Redick called it 'mind-boggling' that LeBron James is still this good as he gets set to celebrate his 40th birthday. https://t.co/bydJaXWJe0 — Lakers Nation (@LakersNation) December 30, 2024 For the 2024-25 NBA season, James is averaging 23.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 9.0 assists. The numbers he’s putting up this season aren’t usually what 40-year-old players have. However, the star continues to perform like a star and has gone above and above. Anthony Davis reveals what gift he’ll give his Los Angeles Lakers teammate While the NBA world is waiting for the Los Angeles Lakers star to turn 40, his teammate must not have the date circled on his calendar. Following the Lakers’ 132-122 win over the Sacramento Kings , Anthony Davis was asked about his plans for what to give to James as a gift. “He is turning 40, huh?” reflected Davis, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin . “It is a big milestone. I’ll probably get him a bottle of vino or something... thank you for reminding me. I’m a bad friend.” One does one NBA star get for another as a 40th birthday present? Can never have too much wine. pic.twitter.com/V2GZg3PXRB — Dave McMenamin (@mcten) December 29, 2024 With the star’s birthday a day away, Davis can prepare something special to give to the player who helped him win his first championship.
